The Founder’s Message

Founder

Ann Scott

Our school is a happy place for children to learn and grow. We have been nurturing curiosity and developing independent thinkers since 1991. At Hitherfield, we believe that when children are happy, engaged and challenged, optimum learning will take place. At Hitherfield, every child is unique and comes to us with his or her own strengths and interests. By individualizing our programs, we nurture growth, success and confidence in our students. Developing confidence, decision-making and respect are key components of our Mission Statement and daily life at the school.

A point of difference at Hitherfield is our expansive grounds, an ideal setting for all of our extracurricular activities. Sitting high on the hill by the pond, children delight in learning about their natural environment, catching and studying frogs and tadpoles, reading and sketching by our open fields which offer ample space for play, orienteering, cross-country skiing and sports.

We offer programs for children from Pre-School to Grade Eight.

Why Hitherfield?

Hitherfield students enjoy coming to school!

Hitherfield fosters high expectations of students, that are tempered by dedicated teachers and the individual support and guidance they provide. Through school trips, workshops and discovery activities in the fields or at the pond, students learn and come to respect the world around them. At Hitherfield traditional values go hand in hand with nurturing critical thinking, creativity and discovery. In addition to this, respect in all of its many connotations is very important at Hitherfield.

Hitherfield students have access to an environment that encourages a love for the outdoors. The school has an on-site pond, approximately 110’ across that gives students a chance to learn about the relationships and dependencies of ecosystems. Hitherfield is not only known for academic performance, but takes pride in local humanitarian initiatives as well. By participating in events such as the Terry Fox Run, Food Drives, and Rummage Sales, students learn to understand and empathize with others less fortunate than themselves.

Great Teachers Make for a Great School
Being a great teacher means opening the right books, as well as being an open book — and the staff at Hitherfield School in Milton, Ontario understands the importance of this.

The instructors at the school have a willingness to listen and answer questions, an openness to observe a child’s nature, strengths and challenges and to work with them to help them meet their full potential, which is an essential element of the school’s teaching approach.

With an average class size of only 14 students, teachers are able to focus more on the needs of your child in both group and one-on-one settings.

Great teachers recognize that not every student has the same proficiency in every subject. That’s why the instructors take a personal approach to helping your child grow, with patience and understanding as part of the formula. The teachers consult with one another, as well as talk with parents to best develop a plan to maximize the learning potential of each pupil.

At Hitherfield School, teacher recruitment is quite rigorous not just in terms of their qualifications but also their passion for teaching. Hitherfield teachers are often subject-specific so they have expertise in particular areas and bring current concepts and new ideas to the classroom. There is an unwavering enthusiasm and energy that they bring to students and encourage the students’ curiosity.

Great teachers know what it takes to be great students because they were once successful pupils themselves. From mathematics to language studies, to science and visual arts, you can be sure each program at Hitherfield is lead by a knowledgeable and passionate instructor.

The teachers at the school test the students early (kindergarten and Grade 1) to help students get excited about making progress, as well as to take the fear out of evaluations later in life. This kind of confidence-building helps kids succeed into thoughtful, curious leaders of tomorrow.

Small Class Sizes Make a Big Difference in Learning
They say bigger is better, but that’s not always the case — Hitherfield School in Milton, Ontario, proves this point with smaller class sizes so that your child is not lost in the mix.

Smaller class sizes mean the school’s staff members have more time for each child, which is key in helping students overcome individual challenges. This controlled class size is in contrast to the public school system, where struggling students can sometimes fall through the cracks and become discouraged by a lack of progress.

When there’s more time for each student, there’s more time to assess strengths and weaknesses and formulate an individual learning program to help each student reach their full potential and be successful. Hitherfield doesn’t apply a blanket cirriculum to fit all students; it recognizes that some children learn differently and that each has their own unique strengths.

Smaller class sizes also mean more opportunity for peer mentoring and support, and encourage your child to have the confidence to speak up and ask questions without fear of judgment. Your child will never be penalized for asking a question at Hitherfield, as the school recognizes it’s essential to their development. Interactive learning is not just acceptable at Hitherfield; it’s encouraged.

This more personalized approach yields big results, as evident through the achievements of the students — at graduation, the typical Hitherfield student will embrace secondary education one or two grade levels above their new peers.

The school fosters critical thinking, creativity and the desire to learn more through curiosity and discovery.
